RATIONALE

Every year fire disaster is one of the major problem
worldwide. Example of fire disaster is house fire. House fire usually happens
in urban, rural places and oftenly in squatter area. Fire is fast and can
spread easily, a small flame can turn into a major fire. Some reasons that can
cause a house fire are cooking, smoking, electricity and appliances, children
playing with fire, flammable liquids such as paints.

Fire is an ever-present threat to some homes around the
world. According to SGI Canada News (2017) that there are about 24,000 house
fires every year in Canada and the major cause is cooking equipment that
ignites clothing, oil or flammable liquids.

RESEARCH
QUESTIONS:

How long does the painted wood containing
corncob ash takes to catch fire?

·        
Will the paint maintain its color when the
corncob ash is added to it?

HYPOTHESIS:

            If corncob ash is added into paint, then dry wood coated
in that paint takes longer to catch fire.

REVIEW
OF RELATED LITERATURE

            In the Philippines,
corncobs are commonly utilized as fuel. But in this case, some us the ash from
burnt cobs as fertilizer for farming. It was found that corncob ash gave the
best result in terms of growth and biomass production as it has higher
concentrated amount of potassium. Corncobs have potassium content averaging one
percent, while its ash has a potassium content ranging from 21 to 33 percent
(A. Ocampo, 2014).

            In addition, Potassium Bicarbonate, when introduced to extreme
temperature or heat, disintegrates to a substance of potassium oxide, water
vapor and carbon dioxide. The main point of fire retarding is to slow down fire
expansion and lessen the fire load of the burning material by induction of non
– combustible materials that would overdo the amount of oxygen to the fire. The
depletion of oxygen and other source of fuel to the fire will cause the sudden reduction
in heat, release heat and temperature. Deterioration stage of the fire will arise
and fire retarding begin to die out (Gorbett and Pharr, 2011).

            According to J. Pinto (2011), corncob has possible fire
resistance properties. Corncob were tested on expedite fire resistance test. Corncob
has an acceptable fire resistance when compared with the other thermal
insulation materials.

            Fire retarding mechanism comprises suspension of fire production,
lessening of fire load, degradation of fire and thermal insulation of burning
and unburned parts. For combustion of a material to occur, presence of oxygen
is required. Induction of a material with potassium bicarbonate component to
combustion even will result to degradation of fire due to the decomposition
process occurring, limitation of oxygen consumption of the fire in the
potassium bicarbonate. The decomposition process is similar to the typical fire
retarding procedure of a fire extinguisher (Isitman, Dogan, Bayramli, Kanyak,
2011).

 

 

SCOPE
AND LIMITATION

            This study has intimation on the advanced treatment for
fire inhibition. It is only limited to the ash produced by corncob added to
household paint. This study is conducted to know the effectiveness of corncob
ash in satiating the flame from wood and how long will the painted wood
containing corncob ash takes to catch fire. Only wood will be used in this
study, thus metal will not be included. 3 colors of paint with the same brand
will be used to determine its fire – retardant capacity. The experiment is
divided into two trials, using the pure paint and the one with corncob ash
added.

            This study will be conducted on last week of January 2017
at the Mr. and Mrs. Serata at Barangay Poblacion, Maco.

SIGNIFICANCE
OF THE STUDY

The
result of this study is beneficial to the following group of people.

Paint
Manufacturers. The corncob ash has the capacity of retarding
and extinguishing fire. This concept will help them developing their products.

Communities.
The
community will benefit this study for they can use a cheap and easy way to
create fire-retardant paint. This type of paint would decrease the flammability
of homes made of timbers or woods and thus prevent the rapid spread of fire in this
very densely populated neighborhood.

Future
Researchers. The future researchers will not have trouble in
terms of gathering corncob ash. They will no longer use the commercial flame
retardants and this will not affect their health.

after the burning of a substance or when combustible materials id thoroughly

corncob as a potential reactive component for paint. Corncob ash serves as fire
retardant which is essential for stopping or slowing the spread of fire.

Fire Retardant – Chemicals
that are added or applied to materials in order to slow or prevent the start or

            In this study, we will cover the fire-retardant capacity
of paint added wit corncob ash containing Potassium Bicarbonate which has fire
