The right to education, what is it and how does it affect our lives? This right makes sure that education should always be free and accessible for everyone. Elementary and fundamental education should be free. Elementary education is necessary and obligatory. Technical and professional education shall be generally available for people who have skills that are seeking for it and higher education shall be equally accessible to all on the basis of merit and mark (“Youth For Human Rights”). Education shall be involved in developing and improving human’s personality and strengthening the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and maintain the relationship among all countries, racial or religious ethnic groups around the world, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the preservation of  peace (“Youth For Human Rights”). Parents have the authority to decide the kind of education that their children should be given. (“Youth For Human Rights”). Additionally, in Canada, there is no federal department of education because the Provincial Governments are directly responsible for protecting and regulating education (Zuker, Marvin A. “Children, Education and the Law.”, the Canadian Encyclopedia). In this report, I’m going to explore how the right of education is violated in Canada and around the world and how organizations and individuals are doing to preserve this human right.There are more than 120 million children and adults that aren’t educated across the world. (Human Rights Watch). For example:It is estimated by a 2014 Freedom of information (FOI) request by the Nation Children’s Bureau (NCB) that more than 14,800 children that weren’t educated across England at any moment – and about 3,000 of these children  were unknown. (The Guardian)Some reasons that are mostly possible (The Guardian) :Conflict with other pupils or teachers.The lack of understanding England’s school admission because some parent are immigrants and they are not very good at English.Their life is in a temporary situation and they have to move repeatedly.In their opinion,  their school has not given them the right support to solve problems such as bullying, mental health issues and special educational needs.In some parts of India, if there are names of Dalit children in the school’s register, most of them were not allowed in the classroom and have to work and do labour as leaves or trashes pickers. They were just not welcome there.(Human Rights Watch) (This is both discrimination and education abuses). Many students at residential schools from Northern Ontario rarely had opportunities to live in a normal family life. They were in school ten months a year, and were not allowed to see their parents. Letters home were written in English that might not be easy for their parents to read and understand. Brothers and sisters at the same school were unable to see each other frequently because all activities were divided into groups that were categorized by sex (CBCnews). When students returned to the house, they often found they didn’t belong to their family. They didn’t have the skills to help their parents, and constant lack of their own tradition by school (CBCnews). The education at their schools didn’t meet the standard quality, so many students from residential schools couldn’t function well in the urban society. For being isolated and abused in their childhood, some of these students treated their children with the same behaviors when they became parents and this cycle kept going to the next generations. These are the consequences to the mistreatment by the Canadian government toward the Aboriginal people. What Canadian government has done to protect the right to education:The Government of Canada apologized to residential schools and the damage they caused to aboriginal people. The Canadian Government has also compensated a huge amount of money to all the residential school survivors (CBCnews).All Canadian students are able to attend elementary and secondary education in Canada for free.The Province of Ontario has recently enacted legislation to keep students to remain in school until the age of eighteen to keep them educated and to deal with the problems that some parents do not want their children to be in school because of personal problem that will cost the children their future. (Clarke, Stephen, Children’s Rights: Canada | Law Library of Congress)Globally and in Canada Organization:Save the Children: a network of more than 30 organizations that operate programs such as building schools in poor countries and and raise funds both domestically and internationally. This is one of the world’s leading independent organizations.Unicef Canada is a non-profit humanitarian organization focusing on saving children around the world by raising funds to protect the rights for children around the world. They have reported and exposed places around the world where rights for children are abused or violated. They also have articles that give advices to students and teachers of how to protect the rights to education.Human Rights Watch is a non-governmental organization that is located in many location around the world such as New York, Amsterdam, Toronto,etc. This organization investigates and exposes human rights violations, arrests abusers, and makes governments and people who have power to join in and use their power to end abusive practices and respect international human rights law. They have reported and exposed many places around the world for being lacked of education such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and some other countries where many human rights are being violated. They have also helped poor countries by raising funds.People who have fought for the right to education:Paulo Freire: a pioneers that fought for education.”He wasn’t pleased by the standard low level and “factory” model of education when he was teaching poor adults how to read in Brazil in the 1960s to 1970s.”(Global Citizen)According to him, education should be more empowered and should have a more important role in life.He created and developed a collaborative approach to learning that helps his students understand the socioeconomic position that they find themselves inMargaret Bancroft:She was one of the first educators to realize that handicapped and mentally disabled students had the right to education and they needed special supports and they deserved a study environment that is customized to fit them.She was the founder of the Bancroft Training School in Haddonfield that adapted to the students’ disability and helped them build up their skills.She also raised public awareness for children that are disabled and are in need of special helps from schools.Malala Yousafzai:She was assassinated by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2012 because of her stand for the right to education for girls after the Taliban had banned girls from attending school.She is the world’s most iconic female and she was the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize
