Since the Camera came
on shelves there has never been something that changes the look of art making on
such a big stage as digital art. Digital art uses digital technology in a
creative and practice use. When the digital age began around the 1950 it was only
a matter of time before artists would use the technologies for their own
creative use. As with all new means, artists began to use these brave new
innovations of society, including television, the introduction of the p
computer, the availability of audio and visual software, and finally the
internet, into works of their own. Although digital art is not recognized as a clear
movement, we will still continue to see it unfold into a, a bigger and changing
landscape, making itself a substitute to the traditional means of art making
for a post-millennial society.

Main Points

 

·      Digital art made a connection between artists
and engineers/scientists, which revealed the influences between art and
technology. Artists started to investigate these skills, they were not just using
the new medium but were they also asking people to suggest new things.

Art and Technology, The
Beginning

In 1967, a group was made by engineers named Fred Waldhauer
and Billy Kluver, and artists Robert Whitman and Robert Rauschenberg. This
group was then called “EAT” which was shortened from (Experiments in Art and
Technology) and its goal was encourage the partnership between art and the
world of technology.

They created systems
and performances which involved electronic systems, including electrical
circuity, video projection, Doppler sonar and wireless sound projection. This
was a good step as it gave a good base for this type of art which contained and
discovered the technological progress.

The EAT experiments signified
the connection between artists and technology and this would have never
happened without them.

The first well known
piece was made by Bell Labs where the creator of EAT Billy Kluver worked. The
piece was made by Kenneth C. Knowlton who was a computer graphics specialist.

His work was a photograph of a young nude woman and he turned the image into

The Beginnings of the
Internet

When
the internet was a big hit around the 1990s, this was a big deal for everyone,
but it also helped a lot of Digital artists become more skilled and helping
them become more noticeable. It allowed artists to begin learning new mediums
which involved combing words, images, audio and video files.

The internet helped create a new type of
movement in some people’s eyes which was different from Digital Art, this was
called Internet Art or Net.Art. But it was usually linked with the Digital art
movement which was getting bigger and bigger because of the advantages of the
new technology which was being created and developed.

The internet was a great help for people to
speak and communicate easier which allowed the artists to come together and
easily create work all from their own computer screen which was impossible for
artists in the past as they could never communicate or interact with other
artists around the world.

Exploring the Internet

When the internet
started becoming bigger and bigger a lot of artists used this to further their
work so that they could become more noticeable or viral in internet terms. This
soon became a big Artistic medium for artists.

Concept and Styles

The Digital Arts definition can be very broad
as there is many different types of styles and work but it usually involves
work that has a Digital aspect or has technological means.

Digital Sculpture

Digital
Art can also be a physical piece and not just on a screen, this is usually
created through a sculpture.

Kevin Marks work is created by using a 3D
printer which is easily setup and a lot easier than doing a normal sculpture as
it is a lot easier to carve the form in a computer program than using clay or

Many digital sculptures can even still be used as working
technology as seen by Trevor Paglen and Jacob Applebaums work “Autonomy Cube
(2014) which is both a sculptural object and an open access Wi-Fi hotspot,

Computer Generated Imagery

When
computers first came about, artists used the computers programming and
technology to help with their work and to maybe update it to make it look
better. Technology and programming systems to Update their artwork.

Fifty Years later, when computer graphic
software started being sold to the public, artists started using these programs
from the advertising and graphic design industries, allowing them to make their
own work

 

Joseph Nechvatal, who is an artist who creates computer-assisted
paintings, animations and custom-designed computer viruses. His early pieces from
1986, Nechvatal has been fascinated with the relationship between reality
and virtuality.

 

 

Art on Screen

Most digital Art is usually only able seen on a
screen or monitor, meaning that if there wasn’t this sort of technology in the
world you would have never been able to see this type of work. Artists now put
their work on the internet for people to view and can even now be used on YouTube
to showcase art. A YouTube named Petra Cortright uses this to showcase her
animated graphics.

Interactive Digital
Installations

Interactivity
is a big part of Digital Art, This type of art lets the viewers feel the full experience and will
have you thinking you’re in a real-life experience even though it isn’t.

In 2012 a group called Random International made
a piece named “Rain Room” an experimental installation which would have rain
water would fall on you, this was only imaginable because of the 3D trackers
that would go about following the person, which had been programmed to stop the
fall of the rain water wherever the person was standing, this meaning the person
could feel and experience a rain storm without ever getting wet.  which would have been impossible without the
assistance of Digital technology.

The piece encouraged viewers to consider the
relationship between Man, Nature and Machine.

 

Internet as Medium

Digital Art tools can be accessed
by anyone not that every person in the world can have a computer at their home
allowing artists to make a new environment within the art scene. This let the
artists to be able to bypass the museums and showcase their work online and
giving them an even bigger exposure to people around the world.

media and user generated content to be shared easily and people to be able to
