Naturally, nobody can get by in Japan without knowing about the yen and the country’s flag. Japan uses the Japanese yen, with the symbol being ¥ and pronouns “en”. Currently, there are 1000 yen, 5000 yen and 10,000 yen bills in use. The currency has plant patterns, but I believe the most notable things are the people and their history and the part they played in Japanese history. The Japanese flag is also full of history and a significant one with The United States. Both the Japanese currency and the flag beautiful and violent histories that became symbolizes in the everyday lives of the Japanese people.The 1000 yen bill is graced with the face of Hideyo Noguchi, a Japanese bacteriologist born November 24, 1876, and died on May 21, 1928. He isolated a bacterial grown-breaking agent to syphilis that causes a type of neurological disorders in 1911. Noguchi also succeeded in finding a Bartonella bacilliformis, which causes Peruvian warts and Oroya fever. Although his career path was the cause of some differences in opinion, his contributions to his field were recognized in both Japan and the most of the world. Hideyo Noguchi won many grand awards from all over, including Japan, Denmark, France, and later in Africa. They are, in order: The Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy, The Knight of the Order of Dannebrog, and The Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 2006, The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize was introduced to recognize Noguchi’s contributions to medicine and the part played in healing in Africa.Ichiyo Higuchi is the talented individual to be placed on the 5000 yen. Natsu Higuchi also was known more commonly as, Ichiyo Higuchi. She was a talented Japanese writer of beautiful short stories during the Meiji Period(1868-1912). She had a short life, dying at the age of 24, she was born on May 2, 1872, and died November 23, 1896, in Tokyo). Her wonderfully crafted stories are some of Japanese literature’s best masterpieces. Higuchi used her own experiences of living a poor life and immortalized them in her writings. Her popular short stories are Takekurabe or “Growing Up,” and Jusan-ya or “The Thirteenth Night.” These stories are perfect examples of her using her own life to show the plight of the lowly in her stories. Some of Higuchi’s more known stories have been made into films.Yukichi Fukuzawa is the face planted on the 10000 yen. Fukuzawa was a known and respected writer, educator, journalist, and a best-seller. Fukuwaza’s ideas were the start of modern Japan. He believed that every person should have the opportunity to education, regardless of their station in life. He was the founder of Keio University and the Jiji-Shinpou or “The Times” newspaper. Fukuzawa traveled to Europe and studied in the United States, and he believed Japan was behind compared to the Western parts of the world. He fought for the use of some Western ideas in Japan, particularly focused on education. In order to help and support this idea of blending ideas, Fukuzawa wrote best-selling books. His writings include a Japanese-English dictionary, where he wrote two new katakana characters to help the Japanese people adapt to the English language.
