Everyone loves to listen to music and rock n roll can almost be heard in any song you listen to. Rock n roll has also influenced many people and singer. Big Bill Broonzy was a blues artist from Lake Dick, Arkansas, he was in the music business from 1927 to 1958. At 10 years old Bill made himself a fiddle and would play with his cousin at churches. As he got older he switched to a guitar where he started making music, he was influenced by, Jimmie Rodgers and Son House. He started making music in the 1920s but didn’t really get famous till 1940 when he signed with Paramount. Big Bill was unique because he would write protest songs and song about equality his song “Black, Brown and White” is used for education on racism to this day. Bill contributed by have influences on many big names such as Eric Clapton and The Derek and the Dominos.The Beatles are arguably the most famous rock n roll band ever. The Beatles formed in 1957 in Hamburg and the UK. They were influenced by artist like Elvis Presley and Little Richard. They started playing in little clubs then in 1963 they came out with the album “please please me” and this was their start to “beatlemania.” The Beatles were unique because they were really the first band to do stadium tours where they would go to professional sports stadiums and hold concerts so lots of people could come. Some of their contributions were new psychedelic and progressive music. The Beatles influence Bob Dylan and The Who, plus many more. I choose the Beatles because I love all their music. The Mamas & The Papas were a folk band from 1965 to 1971. Their first album If “You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears” in 1965 became number 1 on the top 200 billboards. Like the Beatles they were only together for a short time till they all split up and went on for solo careers. They released 5 albums and 17 singles which 6 made the billboards. They are unique because their music was a big part of the counterculture in the 1960s. They contributed a new type of protest music that was peaceful and everyone enjoyed. They influenced bands like Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys. I chose this band because “California Dreamin” is one my of favorite songs.Van Halen is a hard rock band out of California, they were formed in 1972 and they are still touring. Van Halen was influenced by Eric Clapton just like Big Bill. Their most famous album “1984” released in 1984 hit number 1 on the 200 billboards. Van Halen had 6 number 1 singles and has sold more than 80 million records. Van Halen had the most number 1 hits in billboard’s mainstream rock. They are the 7th greatest rock band according to “VH1.” Van Halen was unique because their performances were one of a kind they were “larger than life.” Van Halen contributed a new sound to the guitar that was more eclectic than ever and a defying sound that everyone knew. I choose Van Halen because they are my all time favorite band.Alice Cooper was a Glam Rock artist who started in 1963 and is still touring today. He was influenced by bands like “The Who”and the “Yardbirds.” Alice started out with a group called the spiders in his younger days where they would perform in Los Angeles. By the late 1970s he formed his own group “Alice Cooper.” they group came famous and was unique for their wild performances. His shows would be like plays but no one would know what to expect. In 1974 he split from his band and since then has been solo. Alice contributed to rock n roll by his shows, he made them interesting and fun for the audience so everyone could enjoy them. Cooper influenced “The Flaming Lips” and “Rob Zombie. I choose Alice Cooper because I love his songs and how they all sound. Genesis was a prog rock band formed in 1967 and retired in 2007. The first few singles they made were very unsuccessful but after they split Jonathan King the band did their first professional tour. They made 15 studio albums and 6 live albums, 6 of their albums were in the top charts in the UK. Genesis is unique because they kind of started the prog rock music and influenced a lot of alternative bands like Elbow. They contributed the new sound of rock and prog rock a lot in the 80s and now you can hear their music being played in a variety of rock bands. I choose Genesis because of the song we listened in in class “the music box.”Prince was a funk rock singer from 1976 till his death in 2016. Prince may be one of the most well known musicians and most talented to ever live. He has sold over 100 million records worldwide and is one of the top best selling artist ever. “Purple Rain” one of his most famous works was on the billboards top 200 for 24 consecutive weeks. He was inducted to the rock n roll hall of fame in 2004. Prince was unique because of his flamboyant style and his wide vocal range. He contributed a new era of rock music by using love and acceptance. He was influenced by bands such as James Brown and the Beatles. He influenced artist like David Bowie. I choose Prince because he is one the most well known musicians ever. Earth, Wind and Fire was a disco rock band formed in 1970 and still going today. They were one of the most successful bands in the 70s. Five of their member were introduced into the songwriters hall of fame. Earth, Wind & Fire was the first African American act to sell out Madison Square Garden. They have two songs in the grammy hall of fame “That’s the Way of the World” and “Shining Star”. EWF is unique because they overcame the race barriers in the 60s and 70s and became a very successful band. They contributed a new sound of disco that changed black pop music. Earth, Wind & Fire have influenced artists such as Beyoncé and Usher. I choose EWF because I love all of their songs I think they have a great sound to them. Green Day is a punk rock band that formed in 1986 and is still touring today. Their rock opera “American Idiot” was on of their best selling albums that sold 6 million copies. They have had 3 debut albums go to number 1 on the billboard top 200. They have sold 85 million records worldwide and won five Grammy Awards Best Alternative Albums. They were introduced to the rock n roll hall of fame in 2015. Green day in unique because they have many different types of albums from rock operas and trilogy albums. They contributed punk rock to rock n roll they were kind of the first to make that type of music. They were influenced by David Bowie and The Who. They influenced groups such as Sex Pistols and The Clash. I choose Green Day because they have my all time favorite punk rock band. Gloria Gaynor was a new wave musician starting in 1965 and still touring today. “I Will Survive” was ranked number 1 greatest dance song of all time by VH1. “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” reached top 5 on the billboard’s top 200 disco songs. She in unique because in the 1980s there was a backlash to disco and new wave but she released two albums that became very popular. She contributed a new sound and rhythm to new wave and disco that made people fall in love with it. She was influenced by groups like Diana Ross and Martha and the Vandellas. She influenced Madonna and Lady Gaga. i choose Gloria Gaynor because one of my favorite songs in “I Will Survive”. Rock n roll has a huge influence of music from the bluck to hard rock all the way to disco. The blues started it all and i am very thankful for that because I love all rock n roll music even if you don’t like rock n roll it even has an influence in rap too.
